就業先としては、一般的に整備工場となるが、整備工場に就職するには、国家資格である自動車整備士の資格を取得している方が有利である。一方、資格を取得していなくても就職することは可能であり、整備工場に就職後、勤務をしながら夜間や休日に講習を受けられる養成施設（自動車整備技術講習所）に半年～1年半通い、資格を取得することも可能である。また、自動車整備に関して学ぶ工業高校の自動車整備科や、自動車整備の専門学校等の出身者だけでなく、高等学校や大学などで機械や電気に関する基礎的な知識を学んでいると有利である。このほか、自動車の運転免許や危険物取扱者乙種第四類、ガス溶接技能者、アーク溶接技能者（基本級）の資格があれば入職に有利となることが多い。上記については、中途採用の場合も、同様である。
自動車整備士の資格を取得するには、整備専門学校等の養成施設に通う方法と、前述のとおり整備工場で働きながら養成施設（自動車整備技術講習所）に通う方法がある。これらの養成施設を修了すると実技試験が免除となり、学科試験のみの受験となる。
進化を続ける自動車は、近年、カメラやセンサーなどの電子技術が多く導入されるようになり、構造や装置は、複雑化、精密化している。そのため、自動車整備士が仕事をするためには、新たにスキャンツール（自動車の電子的な故障の原因究明に必要な機器）を使いこなすための知識や、新技術に対応できる技術力が要求されるようになっている。さらに、環境や騒音などの各種規制は年々強化されており、変化する規制に対応する新たな整備方法や検査方法を学び続けることも必要である。
