高度の熟練技術が要求され、機械工学的な知識があると有利であるが、実務を通して経験を積むことが重要である。使用する機械や道具も多く、使い方を身につけ習得することが求められる。通常は、教育は汎用工作機械で、素材加工、部品加工作業などからはじめて基礎的な切削技術を習得してから、ＮＣフライス、マシニングセンターなどのＮＣ工作機械の操作を行う。
小規模工場の金型製作は、ほとんどの作業を一人で行うことが多いので、あらゆる工程を経験する。また、人数の多い職場の場合には加工作業が分業となり、当初は基礎的な加工作業を経験する。
関連する資格として厚生労働省が定める技能検定の「金型製作技能士」があり、資格を取得すると技術の証明として評価される。
最後まで作業をやり抜く根気、粘り強さが必要である。また、金型は一品受注生産であり、決まった工程で同じものを作る作業ではなく、新しいことに対し好奇心をもって創意、工夫できることが求められる。
