入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。
工業系の高校、機械・電気系の専門学校等を卒業し計器メーカーに入職するのが一般的である。他の職業からの中途採用もある。
新規学卒者は、学校、ハローワークの紹介がほとんどである。中途採用は、ハローワーク、新聞、求人広告等で行われている。
入職直後は、簡単なユニット組立作業を行い、仕事に慣れ経験を積み重ねるに従い複雑なユニット組立作業へ、更には総合組立作業へと進む。これらの組立作業の経験を経て、次の工程である「調整・検査工程」では、組み立てられた製品が所定の値にあるかを基準器と比較して確かめ、必要に応じ微調整を行う。これらの作業は、組立作業の経験がないとうまくできない。経験を積んで現場の責任者等になる場合もある。
機械や電気についての初歩的な知識があれば作業の習得、上達に役に立つ。細かい部品をピンセットやドライバーなどを使って取り扱うために手先の器用さや、視力がよいことも求められる。また、座って長い時間、同じ姿勢で作業を続けられる集中力や根気強さも重要である。
