入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、工業高校や電気・電子・機械・情報などの専門学校、大学等を卒業して入職する人が多い。多くの企業では、計画的に新規学卒者を採用している。一般に募集は学校やハローワークを通じて行われる。中途採用も行われ、募集はハローワークのほか、求人広告なども使われている。
　医療機器の中でも放射線を取り扱う職場では、国家資格の「エックス線作業主任者」や「第２種放射線取扱主任者」が必要となるが、入職後に社内教育を経て受験機会を得るのが一般的である。これらの資格を取得すると、医療現場での据付けやメンテナンスの分野での仕事も可能となる。
　入職後に職場ごとに研修等が行われるが、医療機器には超音波装置のような携帯・移動型機器から磁気共鳴画像診断装置や粒子線治療装置のような大型機器に至るまで多様な機種があり、組立作業も簡単な作業から高度な技能・技術を要するものまで幅広くある。工学系の基礎知識の他、各種の医療機器に関連する規格（国際、日本、業界）の知識も必要となる。
