入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、一般的には入職後3～4カ月間の小型建設機械(4トン未満)による実技の社内研修を受けた後、機械メーカーの訓練所に入り約1週間の実技と学科の講習を受ける。その後、厚生労働省所管の「車両系建設機械運転技能講習」を修了し、現場に配属されることになる。
また、建設機械オペレーターとして現場で作業をするためには担当する建設機械に応じて「クレーン・デリック運転士免許（クレーン限定）」や「移動式クレーン運転士免許」の取得、「車両系建設機械（基礎工事用）運転技能者」（以上、厚生労働省所管）を修了すること、国土交通省の「建設機械施工技士」2級を持っていること、職業訓練校の建設機械運転科を卒業することなどが必要である。公道へ出て作業をする場合には、公安委員会の「大型特殊自動車免許」も必要となるので建設機械オペレーターのほとんどは「大型特殊自動車免許」を取得している。
建設機械オペレーターに関する他の国家試験には、国土交通省が所管する「建設機械施工技術検定（1・2級）」がある。
