臨床研究者は診療に当たるため、全て医師国家試験の合格者であり、大学医学部の卒業者であるが、総合科学である基礎研究には異なったさまざまなテクニックを持つ専門家が参加しており、理学部、薬学部、農学部、工学部などの出身者も多い。ただし、大学の研究室で研究する場合には、大学院を修了している者がほとんどである。
　公立の研究機関や民間の研究機関、医療機関などで研究をする場合には、公務員試験や採用試験を受けて研究職として採用され、担当分野について専門的に研究を行う。
　優れた研究能力だけでなく研究が好きであるということが求められる。科学者として研究倫理を遵守する心構えも必要である。
