葬祭スタッフとして働くには、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、厚生労働省認定の「葬祭ディレクター技能審査」に合格しなければ、葬祭ディレクターの名称は使用できない。
大手葬儀社では定期採用も行われているが、中途採用が中心で、ハローワークや求人広告を通じて募集されることが多い。
葬祭ディレクターを養成する機関や専門の学校はあるが、一般的には葬儀社の従業員として実務経験を積み、社内研修や先輩・上司などの指導を得て技術・知識・能力を高め、葬儀全般を統括する葬祭ディレクターを目指すことになる。
通常、葬儀全般を管理・統括する技術・知識・能力などを修得するまでに2～3年、社葬・団体葬などの大規模葬儀の企画・運営・管理のできる能力を修得するためには、さらに数年を要するといわれている。
葬儀は悲しみの中で厳粛に執り行われるため、葬祭業務に携わる者の言動がその葬儀の成否に大きな影響を与える。したがって職務を遂行する上で、落ち着き、忍耐、誠実、清潔感、信頼性などが重要である。予想外の出来事にも素早く判断を下し、スタッフに的確な指示を出せることも必要である。また、宗派の違いにより変化する葬儀の段取りなど多くの知識、経験も必要となってくる。立ち作業が多く、長時間の式にも対応するため一定の体力が求められる。
