葬儀は死者を悼（いた）み、その一生をしめくくる大事な儀式である。遺族にとって意味のある、心に残る葬儀を実現するため、遺族を支え、行事全般を円滑に進める役割を果たしているのが葬祭ディレクターである。
具体的な仕事としては、まず、病院などから遺体を自宅又は葬儀会場に搬送し、遺体を棺に収めて通夜の準備をする。次に喪主・遺族の希望を聞いて、葬儀の日時、場所、規模、宗派、予算などの打ち合わせを行い、企画書と見積書を作成する。
企画書と見積書に基づいて、会場の手配や設営、必要資材の調達、僧侶や神父など宗教家との打ち合わせ、霊柩車やハイヤーなどの手配、火葬場の手配のほか、会葬礼状や遺影写真、生花の手配をはじめとする様々な手配、会葬者数の予測、式次第の決定、役割分担や席順の決定などを行う。また、通夜・葬儀式・告別式・精進落としの行事全般がスムーズに行われるよう運営・進行を行う。
さらに葬儀終了後の四十九日法要、香典返しの手配を行い、このほか仏壇や墓地の相談、保険、相続の相談や手続の代行なども行う場合もある。
葬儀行事は突発的に生じ、かつ一般的には通夜から精進落としまでの一連の行事が２～３日間程度の短期間で行われるため、葬儀の企画・運営・進行は段取りよくスムーズに行うことが求められる。
