入職にあたって必須の資格には、普通自動車二種免許がある。ただし、これだけではタクシーの乗降介助や利用者の身体介助を行うことができない。送迎だけでなく、介護サービスも提供する場合は、介護職員初任者研修等を受講しているか、介護福祉士などの介護関連の資格を取得していることが必要である。
新卒で入職するケースはほとんどない。介護タクシー会社に転職するか、自営として起業するケースが多い。
介護タクシー事業は事業用車両1台の個人事業主としても、法人としても開業できる。一般常用旅客自動車運送事業（福祉輸送事業限定）の開業認可を受けるための基本的な流れとしては、まず車両や事務所、開業資金が用意できるなどの基本要件を満たした上で、地元の運輸支局へ事業登録申請を行う。この際の必須となる所有免許は普通自動車第二種免許である。審査に通ったら、地方運輸局で法令試験と事情聴取を受け、事業認可が下りたら、車両の検査・登録、必要であれば緑ナンバーへの変更などを行い、許可認可から6カ月以内に開業することになる。
一般のタクシー会社に勤務する場合は、普段は通常のタクシーを運転していて、予約があったときに介護タクシーを運転するケースがほとんどである。
自営業者の場合は、病院などの医療機関や行政との提携、予約の集中への対応などで事業者間の横の連携が不可欠なため、地域の同業者間のネットワークを築くことも必要である。
コミュニケーション能力、突発的な事態に対応できる能力、相手を気遣うホスピタリティ、利用者の尊厳を重んじる気持ちが求められる。
