入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、車両等を運転するため、普通自動車免許が必要とされることが多い。準中型、中型あるいは大型の運転免許や移動式クレーン、フォークリフトやパワーショベルなどの重機の免許を持っていると、入職の際に有利だが、入職後取得することも可能である。また、公害防止管理者など環境関連の資格、危険物取扱者など、扱う廃棄物の種類に関連した資格があると仕事の上で役立つ。廃棄物の処理施設を維持管理する職員を監督する「廃棄物処理施設技術管理者」として関係団体の講習を受講し「（各廃棄物処理施設）技術管理士」の認定を得ると、より専門的な仕事内容に取り組むことができる。
　いろいろな職業を経験した後、転職してくる人も多い。
　入職後、日常の仕事内容や関連する法律等について教育を受け、その後、実務を通して仕事を覚えていく。
　環境保全やリサイクルを通した資源・環境保護などへの問題認識と安全手順など規程順守の精神のある人が望ましいといえる。また、産業廃棄物を積み込むため、車両と保管場所の間を行き来することもあり、一定の体力も必要である。
