パートやアルバイトでの募集が多く、時間の制約がある人でも、短時間の勤務など自分の状況に合った時間帯や曜日に働くことが可能である。保育士の負担軽減のために導入された国の事業（「保育補助者雇上強化事業」など）を活用した採用もある。
朝や夕方などの時間帯の募集も多く、子どもとかかわる職業をめざして保育現場を経験したい学生や、生活経験が豊富な高齢者も歓迎される。
保育の知識や技能の向上を図るには、保育の担い手拡充のために各自治体が無料で実施している全国共通の「子育て支援員研修」なども活用することができ、このような研修への参加を奨励している施設もある。
