入職してからレジスターの操作や金銭、商品の扱い方、客への応対の仕方などについて、マニュアルを使ったり、実際の仕事の中で指導員や先輩などから教わる。パートタイマーの場合でも、一般的に3～4日の訓練期間が設けられている。経験を積むと、チーフ（主任）やトレーナー（訓練員）へと昇進する場合もある。
レジスターの操作には、正確さとスピードが要求されるため、集中力が求められる。また、レジ係の応対によって客の印象が大きく左右されるため、能率よく商品を流し、清潔な身だしなみで、てきぱきと対応することなどが望まれる。
