入職にあたり、「診療情報管理士」の資格があると仕事に就く上で有利である。
資格は一般社団法人日本病院会が指定する大学又は専門学校を卒業するか、同法人が実施している通信教育を受け、認定試験に合格すると取得できる。
病院の中で医師、看護師、薬剤師、検査技師などの専門職と直接かかわるため、事務的能力のほかに診療録の内容を理解するために必要な医学知識や、診療録から作成される様々な情報を分析・解釈する能力が求められる。また、診療録の内容を読みとれる読解力、書類の記載漏れを点検する綿密さ、記録を整理保管する正確さ、医師や看護師の協力を得ることができる協調性、情報管理にあたる責任感なども重要である。
更に、医学や関係技術の進歩に遅れないよう勉強し、英語や医学用語のまじった診療録の内容を正しく理解する能力も必要とされる。
我が国の病院の診療情報管理レベルは、病院の規模・経営主体などにより大きな差があるのが現状であるが、医療の高度化や医療機関の社会的責任に対応するため、資格取得後の専門的能力の向上の環境も整備されつつあり、診療情報管理士指導者の認定なども進められている。
