義肢装具士になるには国家資格が必要である。高校卒業後、3年以上義肢装具士養成施設で学ぶ、又は、大学等で1年（高等専門学校では4年）以上学び、所定の科目を修めた上で、2年以上義肢装具士養成施設で学んで規定の単位を取得するほか、厚生労働省の定める技能検定である「義肢・装具製作技能士」の資格を取得し、義肢装具士養成施設で1年以上学ぶことで義肢装具士国家試験の受験資格を得ることができる。試験に合格すると義肢装具士の資格を得られる。
　経験と熟練が重要であることから、年齢にかかわらず働くことができる。技術を磨いていけば独立して開業することも可能である。
　依頼者の状況は様々であり、幅広い専門知識と高度な技術、医学だけでなく工学的知識が必要である。理学療法士や作業療法士などと協力することも多い。
　人体の形を再現する造形的なセンス、身体の一部として正しく機能させる工学的技術も必要となる。
