プレス加工は生産性が高く、大きいものでは自動車の屋根やドア、小さいものでは腕時計やカメラ・携帯電話などの精密機器の部品まで、幅広い製品や部品の加工に利用されている。
プレス作業は、まず上下に分かれた金型を機械に取り付ける。加工する材料を下型のネストの中に収まるように入れて試し打ちを行い、その結果が作業標準、検査基準に合っているかどうかを測定器などで確認し、必要がある場合は金型を調整する。材料をプレス機の所定の位置に入れてスイッチを押すと、上型がおりてきて材料が加工される。自動化された金属プレス設備を用いる場合には、金型取り付けを行い、金属板の打抜き、曲げ、絞り加工の工程で制御盤の監視・操作を行う。
