入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。学歴は工業系の高校卒業者多い。中途採用では、同業からの転職者が多い。
入職後の訓練は、事業所によって異なり、１年程度の訓練期間が設けられ、基礎として必要な知識を身につけながら実技を通して技能を磨いていく場合と、短期間の新人研修を受けた後、現場に配属されOJTなどの実地訓練によって技能を習得していく場合などがある。
キャリアパスとしては、作業員として経験を積んでリーダー（係長や課長）になり、その後はマネジメントに進むか、知識、技能を高めスペシャリストの道を進むのが一般的である。
関連資格としては、厚生労働省が定める技能検定の「機械加工技能士」がある。試験は、汎用工作機械及びNC工作機械の種類によって区分されている。
必要な知識としては、工作機械、切削加工法、切削工具、材料、プログラミング、測定法、図面の読み取りなどがある。また、実技能力としては、ＮＣフライス盤の的確な操作、ＮＣプログラムの作成、加工の段取り、加工状況に対する的確な判断と素早い対応などが求められる。最近の工作機械には新しい技術が次々に導入されているので、技術面での新たな動きに関心を持つことも大切である。
平面・立体の図形を理解できる空間判断力や、プログラミングのために数理能力が求められる。また、機械操作では加工状況を目で見て的確に判断し、手を速かに動かすことも必要である。
