入職するにあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、工業系を専攻した者が多い。
　入職後は、基礎的な知識等の研修後、OJTで実務経験を積む。必要な技術について外部の講習等を受講する場合もある。組立で経験を積み、検査（調整）を担当したり、３D-CAD等を習得し設計担当となったり、技術営業になる者もいる。組立の技能を深めスペシャリストになる場合もある。
　光学機器の種類にもよるが一人前と認められるには、組立で5年程度がかかると言われている。さらに検査・調整を行うには5年程度、設計には10年程度の経験が必要とされている。関連資格としては、厚生労働省の定める技能検定の「光学機器製造技能士」がある。
　細密な部品を扱うので手先の器用さや慎重に作業する丁寧さが求められる。決められた作業方法と手順で精度にムラのないよう続けていくことが大事で、忍耐力や機械や材料に関する知識、図面読み取り能力が必要である。
