入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。工業高校卒や高専卒、また大学等で理学、工学系を専攻した者が多い。
　また、近年、他業種・他職種からの中途採用で入職するケースも増えている。
　オペレーターに必要な知識・スキルは、入職後に社内研修（Off-JT）、実務を通して習得する。一人前のオペレーターとなるためには、数年の経験が必要となる。経験を積み、現場の管理者、監督者になる場合もある。
　関係資格として、厚生労働省の定める技能検定の「機械保全技能士」がある。その他「危険物取扱者」、「ボイラー技士」等を取得していると仕事の幅が広がる。
　勤務形態が基本的には交替勤務であり、交替チームに欠員を発生させないよう、運転員は自らの健康管理に気を配り、体調管理に責任を持つ姿勢が必要である。また、最新の技術の習得に対する意欲と、自ら進んで勉強するという姿勢は欠かすことができない。さらに保安事故や環境問題を起こさないために、法的規則や決められた手順を守る意識と行動が重要になる。
