入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。高校、専門学校、大学や職業訓練校で印刷、デザイン、DTP、写真関係の学科を学んでいることが多い。
　採用後は、印刷全般に関する研修を受けてから配属され、OJTによって仕事を覚えていくのが一般的である。組版や画像処理などのスキルに加え、製本など最終工程まで視野に入れた作業がこなせるようになることがDTPオペレーターとして一人前と認められる目安となり、5-10年程度の経験が必要とされている。
　関連資格として、厚生労働省が定める技能検定に「プリプレス技能士」があり、取得すると技術が評価される。
　色彩感覚やデザイン感覚が鋭い人、コンピューターに対する興味がある人が向いている。発注主や営業、デザイナーとの意思疎通なしには作業が進まない仕事であり、印刷や製本など後工程との連携が必要なことから、コミュニケーション能力や協調性は欠かせない。
