この仕事に就くためには、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、経営・経済・法律系の大学・大学院卒がほとんどである。一般企業の人事部や人材ビジネス会社などに入社し5～10年程度経験後、コンサルティング会社に入り、コンサルタントとなるのが一般的である。
大手のコンサルティング会社では新卒採用も行っているが、中途採用者も多い。新卒者が企業の人事制度などを熟知し一人前になるには10年近くかかるため、中堅・中小のコンサルティング会社では、即戦力となる中途採用が大半である。
仕事にも役立つため、社会保険労務士、中小企業診断士の資格や、MBA（Master of Business Administration：経営学修士）を持っている者も多い。
コンサルタントとしての経験を積み、他のコンサルティング会社に移ったり、独立開業する場合がある。事業には人脈が必要であり、独立開業した後も、人脈を広げていく努力が欠かせない。中には大学の教員になり、経営やマネジメントを教える者もいる。
論理的思考力、コミュニケーションスキル、また、経営、経済、法律などの専門知識が必要である。変化のスピードが加速しており、遅滞なく知識やスキルを更新していくことも求められる。
