入職にあたって特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。専門学校や通信教育などで薬価点数や診療報酬点数の換算方法、請求書の作成の仕方、カルテの見方などを勉強してから、入職する場合が多い。
　診察料と投薬料の点数など簡単な計算から始めて経験を積み、次第にレントゲンや注射、検査、手術、入院料など複雑な点数計算をするようになる。経験を積み重ね、多くのケースをこなして仕事に習熟してゆく。
　関連資格として民間の「診療報酬請求事務能力認定試験」、「医療事務技能審査試験」がある。
　書類に転記し点数を計算する反復作業のため、集中力を切らさず着実に仕事をこなせる粘り強さが求められる。また、見落としや間違いに気付く注意力が求められる。
