市販されている医薬品は一般用医薬品と言われ、販売できるのは薬剤師と登録販売者に限られている。ここでは登録販売者の仕事について記載する。
登録販売者と薬剤師の違いは、一般用医薬品の中でも副作用や薬の飲み合わせについて特に注意を要する一部の医薬品（第1類医薬品）は薬剤師しか販売できず、登録販売者はそれ以外の医薬品（第2類医薬品、第3類医薬品）の販売のみを行うことである。いずれの医薬品も販売時の情報提供のルール等が決められており、販売時には、顧客の質問、要望に親切・丁寧にわかりやすく対応し、親身なアドバイスも行う。店舗のタイプによって取り扱っている商品は様々であるが、医薬品以外の商品の販売対応も行う。
また、搬入された医薬品や関連商品の受け取り、品出しなどを行う。専用パソコンや目視による店頭商品の販売状況や店内在庫の管理も行う。さらに、来店客に店内レイアウトをわかりやすく表示するためのPOPやバーゲンなど店舗ごとのイベント告知を行うこともある。
仕事を一日の流れでみると、出勤し店内清掃などを済ませた後、品出しやレジ開け、釣り銭の管理を行う。店舗内のスタッフとの朝礼・ミーティングを行う。開店後は、来店客に対して医薬品・関連商品の販売、アドバイスなど接客業務を行う。搬入された医薬品や各種店舗での取扱商品の受け取り、商品レイアウトの整理・補充を行う。店内イベント、商品紹介のPOPを作成し掲示する。閉店が近づけば、当日の業務日誌を作成し、在庫の確認など管理業務を済ませる。シフト制の場合は遅番担当者に引き継ぎを終えて退勤する。
