この仕事に就くためには、特に学歴は必要とされないが、「登録販売員」の資格が必要である。チェーン展開しているドラックストア等の場合は、新規学校卒業者を採用し、入職してからOJTや社内研修で資格取得を支援する場合が多い。中途採用もある。
　正式に登録販売者となるためには、資格取得後24か月（月80時間以上）の実務経験が必要となる。それまでの間は、試験合格後店舗が所在する自治体に登録し、研修中の登録販売者として勤務する。登録販売者として経験を積み、店舗のマネージメントにも関わり店長になる場合もある。
　医薬品に関する知識は不可欠である。商品について何がどこにあるか等の売場の把握、来店客への分かりやすい説明や臨機応変な対応がとれるコミュニケーション能力が必要である。クレームに対する迅速・的確な対応も重要である。また、ニュース・新聞をチェックして流行や新商品の情報に敏感であることも必要である。
