入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。化学系、医動物（人に害を及ぼす動物）系、微生物系の知識があると役に立つが、文系大学の学部卒の者も多い。
仕事をしていく上で「防除作業監督者」、「毒物劇物取扱責任者」業界団体が付与する「ペストコントロール技術者」や「しろあり防除施工士」等の資格を取得している場合が多い。これらの資格は、多くの場合、入職後に経験を積みながら取得する。現場への移動は自動車を使うことが多いので、普通自動車運転免許があるとよい。
なお、一人前のペストコントロール従事者と認められるには３～５年の実務経験が必要とされている。日本ペストコントロール協会や日本環境衛生センターなどが資格取得のための講習会や防除作業従事者を対象とした研修会などを実施しており、社内研修に加えて活用している事業所もある。
ペストコントロール従事者には対象となる生物の生態に関する知識はもとより、防除に使用する資機材等の知識やその使い分けに関する高度な知識と経験が必要とされる。
有害生物の防除作業は天井裏や床下等、居住者の目が届かない場所で行われることが多いので、依頼者の信頼を得ることが重要である。業務に関する相談など、直接顧客と接する職業なので、コミュニケーション能力も求められる。突発的な事態に対応する行動力も必要とされる。
