クレーン運転士として働くためには、年齢が18歳以上で、運転するクレーンや移動式クレーンに該当する免許（国家資格）の取得、または吊り上げ荷重等による区分に基づく運転技能講習や特別教育を修了しなければならない。
新規学卒者ばかりでなく、中途採用者も多い。
新規学卒者の場合、多くは高卒等で、製造業等の会社の工場や倉庫、建設会社等に採用された後、クレーンの運転の仕事に配属される。社内で別の仕事を経験した後に配属される場合もある。入職時には経験、資格は問われず、配属後に免許・資格を取得するケースがほとんどである。免許・資格取得後は、OJTで仕事に慣れていく。技能を磨き経験を積むことによって、班長、係長、課長などに昇進していく場合もある。
中途採用の場合は、クレーン運転の経験者以外であっても採用されることはあるが、その場合は新規学卒者と同じく入職してから免許・資格を取得することになる。
クレーン運転士として働くには、クレーンの仕組みや整備・点検の仕方等に関する知識を学ぶとともに、玉掛け作業を行う場合には、玉掛け技能講習等を修了することが求められる。また、周りの状況をよく注意し危険の先読みができること、冷静かつ慎重に作業を行うこと、集中力を切らさず緊張感を持って仕事をすることが必要である。大型のクレーンの場合、運転席とクレーンの先端が離れているので視力の良さと遠近感を把握する能力を持っていることも望ましい。
近年では、デジタル制御や自動化技術の進化により、運転の正確性、効率性や安全性が向上しており、それに対応する運転士のスキルアップが期待されている。
