自動車の賃貸借業には、短期間自動車を貸し出すレンタカーと、長期間自動車を貸し出すカーリースとがある。また、個人向けだけでなく、企業向けのビジネスレンタカーもある。貸し出す車には、低燃費のハイブリッド車や、車いすに座ったまま乗車できる福祉車両などもある。利用者によって必要とする車は様々であるため、お客のニーズに最もマッチする車両を勧めるほか、交通、運搬に関するコンサルタントの役割も果たす。
車両は点検・洗車し、貸し出し可能な状態にしておく。自動車の安全性をチェックし、必要な整備を指示する。また、お客に快適なドライブを提供できるよう、車内の清掃を行う。貸し出し可能となった車両は、見やすいように工夫して並べる。
お客から予約を受けると、日時や車種などの予約内容を予約管理システムに入力して、車両の稼動状況を把握できるようにする。お客が希望する車種が営業所にない場合は、近隣の営業所や管理センターに連絡し、用意する。
車両を貸し出す際には、車の操作方法や契約事項を説明し、お客とともに車両の点検を行い、ドライバーの免許証を確認して、必要な書類を記入してもらう。車両が戻ってきた時には、キズや故障などがないかを確認をして、料金の精算を行う。
お客が事故や故障に遭遇した場合には、必要なアドバイスを行うほか、本部の指示に従い、その処理を行う。法人の利用客には、法人の契約条件を説明するほか、必要に応じて訪問セールスを行うこともある。
