入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。入職後は、はんだごて等基礎的な技能の研修を経て、一定レベルに到達できればラインで作業できるようになる。その後は、OJTで作業を習得していく。
　作業手順を人に教えられるようになれば一人前とみなされるが、半年～1年程度の時間が必要とされる。組立の経験を積み、ラインのリーダー等指導業務を経て、工程管理、生産管理も含めマネジメントの仕事に昇進する場合もある。
　関連資格としては、厚生労働省の定める技能検定の「電子機器組立て技能士」がある。
　はんだ付けや接着剤の取り扱いや安全な作業方法などを習得することが必要になる。ラインの前後の人の作業も理解しつつ互いに補完し合いながら作業するのでチームワークが求められる。作業の自動化、機械化が進み機械オペレーターの仕事が増えているため、機械操作の知識、スキル等が重要である。
