入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。高校卒業後、入職する場合が多い。特に専攻も問われない。入職後は、各半導体メーカーによって異なるが、1～6カ月にわたってOJTによる教育が行われる。操作手順をきちんと理解すれば、一応の操作はできるようになる。その後、現場での経験を重ねて、迅速かつ間違いのないオペレーションができるように熟練していく。
　現場経験を積み、工程の管理者、クリーンルーム全体の管理者等になる者や専門性を高めエンジニアになる者もいる。また、生産職から本社等で生産管理の仕事に従事する場合もある。
　関連資格としては、厚生労働省が定める技能検定の「半導体製品製造技能士」がある。
　半導体製造装置は、きわめて複雑で精密な装置なので、その取り扱いには注意力が求められる。操作手順もマニュアル通りの操作が要求されるため、マニュアルをきちんと理解し、教えられた通りのオペレーションを継続できる正確性、几帳面さが必要である。
