カウンセリングに関連する資格には、臨床心理士、公認心理師などがあり、この仕事に従事している者はいずれかの資格を保有している場合がほとんどである。学歴面では大卒・大学院卒の割合が高く、専攻は心理学系学部、学科の卒業者が多い。
臨床心理士は、指定大学院を修了した者でなければ受験資格が与えられない。公認心理師は、2018年に試験が開始された国家資格である。試験にはいくつかの受験区分がある。その他医療福祉分野では精神保健福祉士（PSW）が相談に対応する場合もある。
入職後は、職場でのOJTで経験を積む場合が多いが、カウンセリングのスキルの習得に際しては、先輩カウンセラーからのSVを受ける場合もある。カウンセラーとして一人前と認められるには数年の臨床経験が必要とされている。臨床経験を積んでフリーランスや独立開業する場合もある。
心理カウンセラーには、コミュニケーション能力のほかクライアントとのラポールを形成するスキル（相手の心を開かせ良好な人間関係を構築するスキル）など心理面からのアプローチ技術に加えて、継続的にクライアントに関わることができる粘り強さが求められる。面接記録等を作成する事務処理能力も必要である。また、カウンセラーには、厳重な守秘義務が課されており、個人情報保護や倫理規定の遵守などコンプライアンスに関わる高い見識も求められる。
