この仕事に就くためには、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、大学、大学院卒業後入職する人が多い。中途採用もある。最近の傾向としてMBA（経営学修士）などの資格を保有する者もいる。
　入職すると1カ月程度の研修プログラムが用意されているほか、希望者に対してはロジカルシンキングやフレームワーク作成などテーマごとの研修も用意されている。さらに入社3年、5年といった節目ごとに幹部研修もある。企画・調査担当として2年間程度の実務経験を経て、開発製品・商品のコンセプト作案から商品化に向けての購買調査などを担当することができるようになる。
　実際に仕事をしていく上では、部門ごとの原価や損益が見分けられる判断力とマーケティングの基本知識が重要である。パソコンのスキルは必須である。社会や経済動向、市場のトレンドを見極められる洞察力、予見力も必要である。グローバル・マーケティングを目指すには英語や中国語などの語学力も求められる。
