証券会社に入社し、日本証券業協会の外務員資格試験を受けるのが一般的である。就業者の多くは大卒である。
証券外務員資格は「一種外務員資格」（すべての有価証券に係る外務員の職務を行うことができる）と「二種外務員資格」（特定の商品について取り扱うことができない）の２種類であり、資格取得後、日本証券業協会に外務員登録されてから証券業務を行うことができる。なお、「二種外務員資格」を保有していなくても、一種外務員資格試験の受験が可能である。また、各証券会社では、社員の能力開発のため、独自の研修を行う場合が多い。
なお、独立してファイナンシャルアドバイザー（IFA）として中立的な立場から資産運用のアドバイスを行う専門家となる者もいる。
