入職に当たって必須となる資格や学歴はなく、未経験でも入職可能である。未経験者の場合、先輩の歯科助手や歯科衛生士などの仕事を見て、治療に用いる器具・器材・材料の名称や診療の流れなど基本的な知識を身につけながら診察室内の仕事に就くことが多い。
　歯科診療や医療事務に関する一定の知識があれば仕事を進めやすいので、専門学校などの歯科助手コースや医療事務の講座を受講する場合もある。日本歯科医師会が基準を定め、都道府県歯科医師会が講習を主催する「歯科助手資格認定制度（甲種、乙種第一、乙種第二）」もある。
　経験を積むと仕事を効率よく行うことができるようになるが、診療において歯科助手が行える仕事は歯科医師や歯科衛生士の補助業務に限定されるため、国家資格である歯科衛生士の資格を取得し、職域の拡大をめざす人もいる。歯科衛生士になるには、養成機関（修業年数は３年課程以上）を卒業して国家試験に合格し、免許を取得する必要がある。
　歯科助手は医療行為のアシスタントを務めるため、歯科医師の指示を守り、手順の間違いなどが生じないよう、注意力と丁寧さが必要となる。歯科ユニットや器材に触れることが多く、感染対策も重要となるので、安全や衛生管理に対する意識も求められる。また、受診者と接する機会が多いので、コミュニケーション能力も大切である。
