社会保険労務士になるには、社会保険労務士試験に合格した後に、全国社会保険労務士会連合会に備える社会保険労務士名簿に登録（実務経験2年以上又は事務指定講習の修了が必要）することが必要である。
また、2016年に、社員が1人の社会保険労務士法人（以下「一人法人」という。）の設立等を可能とする規定が施行され、これまで2人以上の社員による設立が必須であった社会保険労務士法人について、社員が1人でも社会保険労務士法人を設立することが可能となった。
資格を取得した社会保険労務士の多くは独立して開業することになるが、開業後も自主的・計画的・継続的に自ら研修・研究を行うことが大切である。
労働保険・社会保険、人事労務関係の諸手続については、関係の法律や規則がたびたび改正されるため、常に新しい情報を入手し、勉強する必要がある。
