カウンターでの業務では、旅客から提示された航空券に記載された、日付、便名、氏名などを確認する。国際線の場合には、名前の綴りがパスポートと一致していることをチェックする。また、パスポートの有効期限、ビザの必要性の有無などの確認も行う。不備がないことを確認後、専用の端末を操作して搭乗券を発券する。そのときに、窓側・通路側など座席の希望を聞き、席の割り振りも行う。また、スーツケースなどの大きな荷物の重量を計った上で預かり、手荷物預かり証の発行も行う。機内持ち込みや預かり荷物のうち、持込禁止のもの等についての説明も行う。
ゲートでの業務では、ゲートから搭乗までの案内、アナウンスによる誘導を行う。乳幼児や高齢者、障害者などがいる場合には、優先して搭乗させるなど、安全に搭乗できるように必要な配慮を行い、航空機が時間通り出発できるようにスムーズな誘導を心がける。
前もってチケットを購入していない旅客に航空券を発券する業務や接続便を利用する乗り継ぎ客を案内・誘導するトランジット業務も行う。
