入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。人材派遣会社に登録し、契約先の企業などの受付に派遣されて業務を行う場合が多い。比較的規模の大きな企業、工場、団体、官公署などに一般の社員として採用され、受付の業務に就くこともある。
　入職後は受付カウンターで先輩社員から指導を受けながら、実際に来客への応対を行って経験を積む。
　来客と最初に接するため、企業のイメージを損なわないように親切、丁寧な態度、手際の良い応対が求められる。判断力や清潔感なども必要である。
　迅速かつ的確な応対のためには、あらかじめ館内の配置、企業の組織体系、各部署の業務内容などを理解しておくこと、また重要な客や頻繁に訪れる客については顔と名前、所属先を覚えておくことなども重要である。
