この仕事に就くためには、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。
　新卒採用と同時に、総務事務に配属されるケースもあるが、現場や技術、営業、企画などに配属され、いくつかの仕事を経験して総務事務に配属されることもある。
　総務事務では企業内の様々な部門との交渉があって、提案や依頼などに速やかな対応が求められるので一定以上の社内での勤務経験があると役に立つ。
　仕事に役に立つ資格として、例えば、「第一種衛生管理者資格」、「日商簿記2級資格」、「第三種電気主任技術者」、「防火管理者」などがあげられるが、何れも入社前に取得することは求められておらず、入社後に必要に応じて、企業の研修制度等を利用して取得する場合が多い。
　担当として社内で発生する様々な問題に対応するには、少なくとも3年程度の経験が必要とされる。
　正確かつ迅速な判断力と主体的な行動力が必要とされる。また、他部署・他担当との調整、交渉も多く、コミュニケーション能力や相手への気配りも求められる。同業他社の動向や取引業者、地域住民との関係についても、普段から正確な情報収集を心がけることも大切である。
