保険会社に就職し、代理店営業部門に配属される。仕事に就くために、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。しかし各代理店にいる営業員は保険を取り扱う営業活動を行うために「損害保険募集人一般試験」（一般社団法人日本損害保険協会）、「生命保険一般課程試験」（一般社団法人生命保険協会）に合格し、「損害保険募集人」「生命保険募集人」として登録することが義務付けられている。そのため保険営業への支援等を行う立場にある代理店営業は、代理店にいる営業員と同等以上の知識を持つ必要がある。入社後に社内研修やOJTを通して知識等は身につけられるが、「損害保険募集人一般試験」、「生命保険一般課程試験」の受験を推奨されている。仕事で得た知識を生かして代理店として自分が独立する場合もある。
　自社の保険商品の知識はもちろん、関連の制度、法律等も理解している必要があり情報収集、自己啓発が求められる。また保険会社と代理店を円滑につなぐ役割を担っており、代理店と日常的に連絡をとり、その業務をきめ細かくサポートできるコミュニケーション力も重要である。
