入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。
　自動車メーカーと直接販売契約を結んだディーラー（販売会社）に勤務する。入職者は、高校・大学等からの新卒者と中途採用者がいる。
　ディーラーに入社すると、多くの場合、メーカーの研修センターなどで基本的な研修を受ける。その後各ディーラーにおいて、基礎訓練期間として自動車一般の知識、法律知識、販売、登録、代金回収などの教育を受け、先輩とともに顧客を訪問し、セールス活動の実務を学んでゆく。
　試乗や納車を行うには、自動車運転免許証が必要である。
　顧客との良好なコミュニケーション、信頼関係を構築する能力が求められる。外回りが多いので、行動力と体力も必要である。
